JON A. DORF, ESQ. - Founder & Managing Partner

Founder and Managing Partner of The Dorf Law Firm, LLP, Mr. Dorf represents a wide range of established and emerging businesses and their owners.

In the corporate arena, Mr. Dorf advises clients in a variety of areas including the sale and purchase of businesses, the implementation of internal agreements (such as shareholder agreements, operating agreements, and related governance agreements), and the negotiation of contracts. He also counsels businesses on a wide range of matters relating to their growth, strategic planning, and litigation needs.  Business clients range from start-up entrepreneurial ventures to established multi-million dollar companies.

Mr. Dorf has a dynamic, rapidly-expanding practice in the real estate sector that includes the finance, purchase, and sale of large commercial properties as well as leasing arrangements on behalf of owners and tenants. He has been instrumental in many large scale and high profile real estate transactions. Since 2005, The Dorf Law Firm, LLP has handled commercial real estate transactions totaling approximately half a billion dollars.

A diverse group of clients benefit from Mr. Dorf’s expertise in the intellectual property field on matters including the procurement and maintenance of trademarks and copyrights, the licensing of intellectual property, and the prosecution and defense of trademark and copyright issues.

Appointed Positions

Mr. Dorf offers both legal and practical perspectives to his clients, drawing upon his own experience as the firm’s founder and managing partner, former Chair of the New York State Bar Association’s Law Practice Management Section, and present Chair for the Westchester County Bar Association’s Law Office Management Special Committee.

Presently, he serves on the Board of Directors of the Westchester County Bar Association. Mr. Dorf also serves on the Board of the Business Council of Westchester (formerly known as the Westchester County Chamber of Commerce), Westchester’s largest business trade group, and as its General Counsel.  Additionally, for approximately seven years, he served as a Town Prosecutor for the Town of Mamaroneck. Mr. Dorf was also a member of the Harbor Commission of the Village of Mamaroneck.

Recently, Mr. Dorf was appointed President of the Orienta Point Association, Inc. Originally formed in 1928, this community organization is now comprised of approximately 525 homes. It functions to protect and promote the interests of its current members as owners of property, or as residents, in the area known as Orienta Point in Mamaroneck, NY, where Mr. Dorf and his family have lived for several years.   

Awards/Honors

In May, 2010, Mr. Dorf was selected for inclusion in 2010 NEW YORK SUPER LAWYERS for outstanding work in the areas of corporate business law and real estate law.

In April, 2009, Mr. Dorf received an exceptional award on behalf of the firm. The Dorf Law Firm, LLP was inducted into the Business Hall of Fame as recipient of the "Small Business Success Award," one of five awards sponsored by The Business Council of Westchester.     

Prior to that, Mr. Dorf was the recipient of the 2008 Pace Setter Award. The Pace Setter Award was sponsored in part by Pace Law School and the Westchester County Bar Association. The award was presented to one Westchester County attorney who demonstrated overall excellence in professional and community work, prominence in the Westchester legal profession, and fierce determination and success at being the best at what he does. As managing partner of The Dorf Law Firm, LLP, he was proud to receive, on behalf of the firm, the Family Friendly Employment Policy Award presented by the Westchester Women’s Bar Association (WWBA) recognizing the firm’s commitment for creating and instilling family friendly employment policies within The Dorf Law Firm, LLP. The consummate adventurer, Mr. Dorf was a finisher in the 2002 New York City Marathon, the 2005 New York City Triathlon, and in 2003 he summited Mount Rainier in Washington state, an impressive 14,410 feet above sea level.

Presentations and Lectures   

In addition to Mr. Dorf’s responsibilities at The Dorf Law Firm, LLP, he has also reached out to the legal community by giving presentations on various areas of the law. In 2008, he was guest speaker on the subject of commercial real estate for Pace Law School's New Directions Program. Mr. Dorf also spoke in 2008, at the Westchester Woman's Bar Association Real Estate Expo on the subject of commercial real estate transactions and at the September 2009 "Commercial Purchasing, Leasing and Workouts" seminar sponsored by Skyline Title, Inc. and promoted by the Westchester County Bar Association and the Westchester Women's Bar Association.

A graduate of Connecticut College and Albany Law School of Union University, Mr. Dorf is admitted to practice in the State of New York, as well as, the United States Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and the District of Connecticut. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association and the Westchester County Bar Association.
