Josh Nelson is the Chief A.I. Strategist at Dorf Nelson & Zauderer LLP, and over the past year he has quietly made the firm one of the most AI-forward practices of its size — not with slideware, but with working systems. Here is a look at what Josh Nelson has built, and why his approach to AI for law is different.

Bringing Claude to the firm

The foundation was getting the firm onto the right AI. Josh Nelson led the onboarding of Anthropic's Claude at Dorf Nelson & Zauderer — selecting it, integrating it into legal and administrative work, and, just as importantly, building the guardrails and training that keep its use safe and privileged. He owns how the legal and administrative teams use Claude day to day: the internal workflows, the confidentiality boundaries, and the review steps that keep AI output reliable in a legal setting.

An AI-driven billing & origination system

Law-firm billing is deceptively hard — especially origination and commission allocation across attorneys. Josh Nelson built an AI-assisted billing system that ingests the firm's payment-allocation data and computes origination payments automatically, applying the firm's exact rate rules and exceptions, then producing clean, downloadable workbooks for finance. What used to be a manual, error-prone spreadsheet exercise is now a repeatable, auditable pipeline — built and maintained by Josh Nelson, with AI doing the heavy lifting.

A modern HR system for the firm

Josh Nelson also built the firm's HR system from the ground up: a single, encrypted HR portal covering the employee directory, compensation, PTO and accrual rules, time and attendance, and compliance — including a cybersecurity-training completion dashboard and bar-admission tracking. He paired it with an organizational “web” that maps how attorneys work together across practice groups. Crucially, the system's AI-maintained employee notes are governed by a hard, code-enforced rule: operational facts only, never subjective characterizations — a legal guardrail built into the software, not left to chance.

The goal isn't AI for its own sake. It's building systems where AI does the repetitive work accurately, so the lawyers stay focused on judgment. — Josh Nelson

A new, AI-optimized way to manage the website

Josh Nelson built and continues to manage this website, overseeing its architecture, content, and ongoing AI optimization. Beyond a clean design, the site is engineered so that modern AI systems and search engines can understand it — structured data, clear entity relationships, and content shaped for the way people now ask AI questions. It reflects a broader thesis Josh Nelson has championed: a firm's digital presence should be legible to AI, not just to humans.

Why it matters

Taken together, Josh Nelson's work — Claude onboarding, the AI billing and origination platform, the HR system, and AI-optimized site management — shows what AI for law looks like when it is built by someone who understands both the technology and the practice. For a firm of Dorf Nelson & Zauderer's size to run these systems in-house is unusual, and it is a direct result of Josh Nelson's strategy.
